VERMONT HISTORY ROOM

The Vermont History Room was organized in 1993 to house the Library’s Special collection

of Vermontiana and materials on local and New England History. At that time, the Collection

was re-catalogued and many of the volumes were refurbished and rebound.

A Local History Room Committee was created composed of Board members and interested and

knowledgeable community residents to oversee the development  of the Collection. A Collection

Policy was created, and amended in 1995.

The emphasis is on Bennington, and Bennington County Town history, though there is much

material on Vermont, in general. Some genealogical information is available.

Gifts of books, pamphlets, and collections of family papers and photographs, and other relevant

materials, are actively solicited. A “Wish List” of wanted books and furnishings is maintained for

interested donors. Bookplates noting donor names are placed in each gift item.

The Vermont Room is housed on the first floor of the Library and is handicapped accessible.

The Research Room is open to the public six days each week: Monday through Friday, from 2-4 p.m.,

6-8  p.m. Monday evening, 10-12 a.m. Saturday, and is staffed by trained volunteers.

There is no charge for use of the collection.

In addition to a small amount provided in the annual operating budget to support the room, a

separate endowment has been created, the donations to which are restricted to the care and development

of this special collection.

The Collection is dedicated to the memory of Jean Campbell Leake.
